One thing I noticed was the fact that in "Cat in the Rain" American selfishness and desire for materialistic things are shown as the "American Wife" introduced in the beginning of the story gets degraded to become an "American Girl" after she shows desire for things like the cat.
This could also be the fault of the husband as he shows ignorance to his wife and tells her to "shut up and get something to read" while his wife is complaining. I mean he offers to help at first but then shortly just gives up and does whatever, ignoring his wife. The fact that the people representing this was shown as Americans in contrast to the other Italians breifly mentioned in the story probably also has some signifigance.
